Alagna Valsesia

Italy, Piedmont (➤ map)(➤ map)
A small town and commune (less than 500 inhabitants) located at the foot of the Monte Rosa , in the Valsesia valley in the province of Vercelli in Piedmont, Italy. Important tourist destination, famous ski resort in winter. Alagna Valsesia is located 107 km northwest of Vercelli , the provincial capital; access by car is only possible from the south-east along the road SP299, through Borgosesia and Varallo (➤ map)(➤ map).

Alagna Valsesia is the most important tourist destination of the long and winding valley of the Sesia River (hence the name of the valley: Valsesia), which springs in the glaciers of the Monte Rosa massif and after approx. 140 km flows into the Po River; many side valleys depart from the main valley, called Val Grande. In the northwest, the Valsesia valley runs under the main ridge of the Alps, including, in this section, Punta Gnifetti / Signalkuppe (4554 m), the southernmost peak of Monte Rosa - markers - refer to the remaining three peaks of the massif: Nordend (4609 m), Dufourspitze (4634 m ) and Zumsteinspitze / Punta Zumstein (4563 m). To the southwest of Punta Gnifetti in the main ridge of the Alps rises Punta Parrot / Parrotsspitze (4436 m), and further the peak of Ludwigshöhe (4341 m). To the north, the municipality of Alagna Valsesia borders the municipality of Macugnaga located in the Valle Anzasca valley, in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola. The border between the Valsesia and Valle Anzasca valleys is a ridge that descends from Punta Gnifetti to the east and further to the southeast. The marker stands for the 3497 m high peak of Punta Grober, and the marker - the Passo del Turlo pass (2738 m), connecting the valleys of Valsesia and Valle Anzasca. To the west, Alagna Valsesia borders the Lys Valley (Valle del Lys), from which it is separated by a long ridge that slopes south from Ludwigshöhe, towards Corno Nero (not marked on the map) ( 4322 m) and further Piramide Vincent (4215 m), Punta Giordani (4046 m) and two closely spaced high mountain passes - the Passo dei Salati (2980 m), accessible from both sides by cable car, and Col d'Olen (2881 m), through which the famous trekking trail - Tour Monte Rosa - runs.

The tourist importance of the village is determined by its location near the high peaks of the Alps, thanks to which it can be a starting point for climbers operating in the area of the Monte Rosa massif, as well as for tourists setting off on mountain expeditions. When coming here, it is worth remembering the role of the town as one of the historic centers of mountaineering. From here, from the beginning of the 19th century, the first expeditions to the peaks of the Monte Rosa massif started. In Alagna Valsesia, as early as 1872, a mountain guide association was founded by 24 members (second only to Courmayeur). Alagna Valsesia is also associated with the name of Silvio Mondinelli, an outstanding Italian climber, one of the few conquerors of all fourteen peaks on Earth exceeding 8000 meters.

In winter, Alagna Valsesia is a ski resort, until recently a small one, but connected since the middle of the first decade of our century - after building a ski lift connecting the upper station of the Alagna-Pianalunga lift with the Passo dei Salati (Pianalunga-Cimalegna-Salati) - with ski areas in the Val del Lys valley (-) and in the western valley Val d'Ayas, together forming a resort known as Monterosa Ski, offering 180 km of slopes of all levels of difficulty. Regardless of this, Alagna Valsesia is famous as one of the most important off-piste skiing centers in the world, with the main areas in the Punta Giordani area, accessible, among others, by thanks to the cable car from Passo dei Salati to Punta Indren , but also thanks to the use of helicopters (heliskiing).
