Alleghe lies at an altitude of 979 m above sea level, in a narrow valley by the lake of the same name (
Lago di Alleghe ). The lake was created in 1771 as a result of a great landslide of rock material and earth that blocked the Cordevole stream
initially flooding areas (including three villages) stretching along the brook up to the village of Caprile
; later natural processes led to the formation of the lake as we know it today.
Alleghe is a town that mainly operates from tourist traffic. In summer, the enormous massif of
Civetta (3220 m), one of the most beautiful and famous peaks of the Dolomites, also famous for many extreme climbing routes. Even the easiest way to the top, the so-called the "normal road" (Sentiero Tivan) is difficult and possible only for tourists with the highest qualifications, although there are also easier routes throughout the entire massif (e.g. some roads starting at Rifugio A. Sonino Al Coldai
, at 2132 m above sea level).

In winter, in the Alleghe region, to the east of the village, a ski resort has been operating since 1982 (from the 1993-1994 season it belongs to the Dolomiti Superski region), with 80 km of slopes (1000-2200 m) of various difficulty levels (mostly medium and easy) and several dozen ski lifts of various types (other places of the resort are Selva di Cadore, Palafavera and Zoldo).
